Details: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of the evacuation of the wounded from the forward area. During a heavy bombardment of gas and other shells he made a tour of all the bearer posts to ensure that all anti-gas measures were being employed. He attended to wounded men in the open during the bombardment with complete disregard of danger. His coolness and courage were a splendid example to all.

Captain Wesley Herbert Secord Wins Decoration – Given Military Cross for Gallantry on Passchendaele Ridge

Another of Brantford’s many sons overseas has received the King’s recognition of gallantry in the field. Capt. Wesley Herbert Secord, son of the late Dr. Levi Secord and Mrs. Secord of this city, and brother of Dr. Reg. and Mr. A.O. Secord has been decorated with the Military Cross for distinguished services in the battle of Passchendaele Ridge last fall. The issue of “Canada” for February 9 contains a list of Canadian officers and men who received decorations and included in the list is the name of Capt. Herb. Secord, who is a former well known B.C.I. boy. He enlisted at Winnipeg two years ago in the C.A.M.C., and left with a Field Ambulance Corps. Prior to his enlistment he had been practicing at Winnipeg.

Dr. W.H. Secord Called by Death – Was on Surgical Staff of the Winnipeg General Hospital

The death occurred in Winnipeg on Wednesday, May 13, of Dr. W. Herbert Secord, second son of the late Dr. Levi Secord and Mrs. Secord of this City.  Dr. Secord received his early education at the public schools and Collegiate of Brantford, then studied medicine at McGill University, graduating in 1903, after which he practiced in Winnipeg.

In 1915 he went overseas with the 11th Field Ambulance Corps and was awarded the Military Cross for bravery under fire at Passchendaele.  After the war he returned to Winnipeg to resume his practice and was appointed to the surgical staff of the Winnipeg General Hospital and the University of Manitoba.  He is survived by his widow, formerly Gertrude Campbell and one son, Campbell, recently appointed to the staff of the University of London, England.  Dr. E.R. Secord of this city and Arthur O. Secord of Detroit are brothers.

The funeral service will be at his late residence, 265 Kingsway, on Friday, May 15, with interment in Saint John’s Anglican Church Yard, Winnipeg.
