Life and Death in the Trenches

We tend to focus today on the battles of WWI like Ypres, the Somme and Passchendaele - that marked the Great War. While it is true that there were some terrible encounters scattered throughout the more than four years of conflict, soldiers were not continually fighting. Trench life was dominated much more by boredom than by terror. In order to deal with both, however, the men at the front developed a number of coping mechanisms. Humorous trench journals, camaraderie, concert parties and superstitions were among the tools used by soldiers to maintain morale at the front.
