Circumstances of Casualty: Killed in Action. During an attack North West of Blecourt, he was shot through the chest by a machine gun bullet and killed.

Mrs. Ellen J.E. Johnston, 23 Alfred Street, has received official word that her son, Private Joseph David Edward Johnston, infantry had been killed in action on October 1. He enlisted here in the 125th and was transferred to the First Canadians.

Previous to enlistment he was on employee of Sam Sloan, butcher, Mt. Pleasant. The sorrowing mother, two brothers, Foster of the C.P.R. telegraph office and Cadet Ancell Johnston of the R.A.F., Toronto and two sisters, Mrs. Richard Broughton and Miss Alma, inspectress at the Steel Company of Canada plant, mourn the loss of a young life given to his country. He was but 20 years of age.

Private Joseph Johnston, son of Mrs. Ellen Johnston, 268 Wellington Street was today reported wounded in the chest. He was formerly employed at Mt. Pleasant and enlisted with the first overseas battalion of the Dufferin Rifles.
