BX October 23, 1916

Mrs. Helen Smith, 62 Dufferin Avenue, on Saturday afternoon, received the news that her husband, Gunner William John Smith, had been wounded in the head. The telegram which was received from the Record Office at Ottawa bore the following information:

“Sincerely regret to inform you that No. 83470, Gunner William John Smith, artillery, officially reported admitted to No. 1 Canadian General Hospital, Etaples, Oct. 12. Gunshot wound in head.”

William John Smith

William John Smith, husband of Helen Gallie, 38 Fair Avenue, died Tuesday in his 58th year.  Mr. Smith was born in Middlesex, England, and had resided in Brantford for the past 39 years.  He was a member of Holy Trinity Church, Mr. Smith was well known in the construction industry in Brantford for many years, and had always taken an active interest in sports. He was a member of the Brantford Gunners Club and a former member of the Sons of England soccer team.  During the First World War Mr. Smith served with the Canadian forces in the 13th Battery overseas.  Surviving besides his widow, are: three sons, Henry, Robert both of Brantford and John, Sarnia; four daughters, Mrs. J. (Helen) Shofield, Mrs. R.O.(Jean) Cardiff, Mrs. G.B. (Nora) Paquin, all of Brantford, Miss Barbara M. Smith, at home; one sister, Mrs. Mary Billings, Hamilton.  Mr. Smith is resting at Thorpe Brothers’ Funeral Home, where the service will be conducted Friday afternoon.  Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

William John Smith

The funeral service for William John Smith, husband of Helen Gallie, 38 Fair Avenue was conducted at Thorpe Brothers’ Funeral Home, Friday afternoon.  Rev. T.D. Painting, rector of Holy Trinity Anglican Church, officiated.  The pallbearers all comrades of Mr. Smith the 13th Battery, were Harold Twidale, Ernest Sage, Thomas Payne, T. Curton, Arthur Usher and J. Heys.  Interment was in Mount Hope Cemetery
