Letters and documents

BX July 13, 1917

That Private William Henry Shaw, who went overseas with the first battalion from the 38th Dufferin Rifles has been killed in action, was the word received in the city today. Pte. Shaw formerly boarded at 25 Mohawk Street, the residence of Mrs. Maddock. Thirteen in all enlisted from this house, and six have been killed. The word that Pte. Shaw had been killed came in a letter from a chum of Shaw’s, who enlisted about the same time.

Wounded Not Killed

That Private William Henry Shaw was not dead as recently reported, but wounded, was the good news received at 25 Mohawk Street where he formerly boarded. A few days ago Mrs. Maddock received word from a chum of his that he had been killed in action. Mrs. Maddock immediately took the matter up with the department at Ottawa and has had a reply to the effect that he was suffering from a gunshot wound in the elbow and was now in Norwich. He is further reported as doing well. In all, 13 of the boarders enlisted from Mrs. Maddock’s home.
