BX November 16, 1917

Mrs. Rose Payne, Farringdon Hill, today received official news that her husband, Private Sydney Payne, infantry, was in Field Ambulance No. 6, with gunshot wounds in the right leg and both arms. Pte. Payne enlisted with the 36th Battalion here and reached France in February 1915. He was wounded on June 13, at the Ypres Salient, and returned to England returning to France on May 17, 1917 and being wounded again on Nov. 6. He was gas poisoned on the second occasion also. At the last word received from him it was learned that he had been promoted to lance-corporal for his good work.

Four Further Local Wounded – Latest Morning Casualties List Includes the Names of Four Brantford Men

On Saturday, word was received by his wife that Private Sydney Payne of the First Battalion had been severely wounded in the arm. Mrs. Payne resides on Mount Pleasant Street. Payne was a machinist by trade and went overseas last June with the 36th Battalion.

PAYNE, Sydney Charles – At the Brantford General Hospital on Saturday, June 10, 1972.  Sydney Charles Payne Sr., in his 81st year; husband of Rose Mary Oliver of 7 Dale Street; father of Sydney Jr. of Fort Erie, Frank and George both of Brantford and Ronald of Toronto; brother of Harry, Mrs. Emily Clarkson, Mrs. Winnifred Avey and Albert all of Brantford; also survived by 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.  Mr. Payne rested at the McCleister Funeral Home, Ltd., 30 Brant Avenue.  Service was held in St. John’s Anglican Church, West Colborne Street on Monday (today), at 2 p.m.  Interment was in Farringdon Burial Ground.  Canon C.V. Tomkins officiated.
