Robert Mayes

Robert (Scotty) Mayes died suddenly Wednesday at his residence, 7 Spring Street.  He was born in Fife, Scotland 76 years ago and came to Canada 50 years ago and had resided in Brantford for the past 40 years.  Mr. Mayes was a veteran of the First World War serving overseas with the 125th Battalion and the Princess Patricia’s. He was a member of the Brantford Fire Department before and after the war and then joined the board of education and was caretaker at the Brantford Collegiate Institute and Victoria Public School, retiring in 1946. Surviving are four sons, Robert of Toronto, Jack C. James A., and Douglas G., all of Brantford; four daughters Mrs. Jack (Patricia) Merrell, Mrs. Elgin (Kathleen) Gratton and Mrs. Fred (Phyllis) Harvey, all of Brantford and Mrs. Roy (Betty) Wood of London; one brother, Alexander Mayes of Scotland; 12 grandchildren, Mrs. (Ina) Mayes predeceased him in 1940. Mr. Mayes is resting at the Beckett Funeral Home for service Saturday at 2 p.m.  Rev. Cyril Squires of First Baptist Church will officiate.  Interment will be in the Soldiers Plot in Mount Hope Cemetery.
