BX October 20, 1916

Another well-known and popular Brantford young man, Private Ray De Wilton Hawken, has been wounded. Word was received this morning by his father, George N. Hawken, Alfred Street, that he had been wounded, but no details were given. Pte. Hawken enlisted with the 5th University Corp, Montreal, along with a number of other Brantford boys, and went overseas as reinforcements for the Princess Patricia’s Light Infantry.

Further word in regard to the wounding of Private Ray D. Hawken of this city has been received. He is, it is reported, suffering from shell shock and is now in a hospital in Chatham, England.

Ex-Soldier Dies After Long Illness

Funeral services will be held Thursday at Thorpe Brothers for H. Raymond D. Hawken, 77 of 19 Scarfe Avenue.  He died Monday after a lengthy illness.

Since the Second World War, Mr. Hawken had been a salesman for Grafton’s Ltd.

Mr. Hawken served during both world wars, first in the Princess Patricia Light Infantry regiment.  During the Second World War he was the officer in charge of the militia headquarters in North Bay.  Between the wars he was a member of the Dufferin Haldimand Rifles.

He was a member of Ozias Lodge and Central Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Hawken was predeceased by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George N. Hawken, Brother George and sister Edna (Mrs. James Coleman).

He is survived by a brother, Harris H. Hawken of Memphis, Tenn. And two nephews, George W.T. Hawken, Brantford and Harris S. Hawken, Jr. of Memphis and several grand-nephews and nieces.

Hawken, Memphis, Tennessee; uncle of George Hawken, Brantford, and Harris Hawken Jr. Memphis, Tennessee; predecease by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George N. Hawken, a brother George Hawken (1918) and a sister Mrs. James H. Coleman (Edna), (1962).  Resting at Thorpe Brothers’ Funeral Home, 96 West Street, from Wednesday evening.  Service Thursday, May 24 at 2 p.m. Interment Greenwood Cemetery.  Rev. J. Douglas Gordon, minister of Central Presbyterian Church, will officiate.
