Lieutenant Percy Gordon Shellington Reported Killed

Lieutenant Percy Gordon Shellington, son of Mrs. Ellis Givens of Hatchley station a member of the 28th Squadron Royal Flying Corps, on home defence duty, has been killed in England, according to word received by his mother. Lieutenant Shellington was killed in a flying accident while a raid was on, but particulars have not as yet been received as to how he was in the fighting. Before enlisting he was a telegraph operator in Northern Ontario….[Ripped page] a pilot’s certificate. Lieutenant Shellington was only 24 years of age. He was born in Brant County, at Harley and received his education in Brantford, and is well known here. Three brothers and one sister survive him, one brother, John, in Medicine Hat, and two brothers Harry and Stanley at home, and Mrs. William Eddy of Scotland, Ont. Further particulars are being anxiously awaited by his mother.

Was Killed in Trial Flight – Lieutenant Percy Shellington of Hatchley Dead in Old Land

Lieutenant Percy G. Shellington well known in this city and throughout Brant County was killed in action while on a trial flight in an aeroplane in England on August the 26th.  Lieutenant Shellington enlisted in Toronto in the early stages of the war as a signaller in the 4th Mounted Rifles.  Before going overseas he tried examinations as a wireless operator at Ottawa, and was successful in passing sixth of out of a class of fifty.  He was engaged in wireless work in the shell zone over eighteen months.  He then returned to England and took an aviation course at Exeter, where he secured a commission and was killed shortly after while engaged on a trial spin.

His mother, a widow, Mrs. Ellis Givens resides at Hatchley.  The other surviving members of the family are John, Medicine Hat, Harry and Stanley at home and one sister Mrs. William Eddy, Scotland.
