Letters and documents

BX October 29, 1918

Mrs. Phipps, 20 Marlborough Street, noticed in the official casualty list today the name of her son, Private John Frederick Fossey as wounded. She had not personally received any official word. Pte. Fossey enlisted with the 36th Battalion at Hamilton when but 16, and has been four years with the overseas forces. He had been previously wounded.

A Cheery Hero

Mrs. Phipps of this city has received a letter from her son, Private Jack Fossey, confirming the announcement in the official casualty lists that he had been wounded. This is the second wound, and peculiarly, no official word in either case was received by Mrs. Phipps, who has been endeavoring to secure information from Ottawa. Pte. Fossey, who is in the hospital at Leicester, his old home, writes a most cheery letter, commenting that at the rate of the present Allied advance he will soon be able to come home. In the meantime, however, he told his mother to address his letters to his battalion, as he would get them when he went back, and this he was anxious to do.
