Mounted Rifles Veteran Home – Private H.E.V. Richardson Allowed to Return on Compassionate Grounds

After 21 months service in the trenches with the Lord Strathcona Horse, Private Harry Eric Vivian Richardson, of 42 High Street returned to the city yesterday morning from Halifax on three months furlough. Pte. Richardson was allowed home on “compassionate grounds.” Private Richardson went overseas in January 1915 with the 7th Canadian Mounted Rifles and on reaching England was transferred to the Lord Strathcona Horse. He went over to France in December 1915. The only cavalry action the unit went through he stated, was when they took the village of Equancourt and Guyencourt near Peronne. They were dismounted and in the trenches along side of St. Quentin. A number of other Brantford men came back on the same ship but they were held up longer than Pte. Richardson as he was on furlough.
