Sapper Receives Military Medal – Sapper Frank Maunder Worked in a Water-Filled Trench Last Year
Sapper Frank Maunder, who left Canada with the 36th Battalion, according to a letter received from him has been awarded the Military Medal for good work done last winter. Two other comrades, one from Hamilton and one from Toronto, were also given this distinction, according to the letter. Nearly up to their necks in water at times, they worked on a trench under very heavy shell fire and bullet fire for eight hours. Little did Sapper Maunder ever think they would come out alive, the shells and bullets flying all around them from the time they started until they finished the trench. That they will never have to take a chance like that again is his earnest hope. The letter was written on November 21, and the boys received the ribbon from General Turner and will get the medal later on. They are the first three to win the medal in the company, and undoubtedly the officer in charge will be proud of their achievement as they are themselves. Previous to enlistment Sapper Frank Maunder resided with Mr. Garton, Fair Avenue.
