BX April 19, 1918

A letter was received this morning from Sergeant Emmanuel Jesse Smith, stating that he was in hospital with a fractured leg, which he received on March 29. Sergeant Smith left here with the 13th Battery in November, 1914, having been at the front nearly three years. This is the first time he has been in hospital. He is also a veteran of the Boer war, having been in South Africa three years. Mrs. Smith resides at 69 Superior Street.

Emmanuel Jesse Smith

E. Jesse Smith, husband of Ethel Elizabeth Money, 186 Marlborough Street, passed away this morning at the Brantford General Hospital, in his 70th year. Mr. Smith was born in

England and had resided in Brantford for the past 37 years. He had been employed with the Cockshutt Plow Company for the past six years and previously had been proprietor of a shoe repair business on Emilie Street for many years. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the South African War, and was the first Sergeant-Major of the 32nd Battery when it was formed here in 1912. During the First World War, he served overseas as a sergeant with the 13th Battery. He was a member of St. Luke’s Anglican Church, the local branch of the Canadian Legion, and the Cockshutt’s Ex-Servicemen’s Association. Surviving besides his widow, are one son, Monty Smith, Brantford; four daughters, Mrs. Leo McPhee (Isobel), Mrs. James Patterson (Ivy), Mrs. Alfred Gilbert (Gwen) and Mrs. Julius Traklo (Audrey) all of Brantford; three brothers, living in England; 11 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Mr. Smith is resting at Thorpe Brothers’ Funeral Home where a service will be conducted Saturday afternoon. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

E. Jesse Smith

Funeral services for E. Jesse Smith, husband of Ethel Elizabeth Money, 186 Marlborough Street, wee conducted on Saturday afternoon from Thorpe Brothers’ Funeral Home. Rev. C.V. Tomkins, Rector of St. Luke’s Anglican Church, was in charge of the services. During the service at the Funeral Home, a solo, “Abide With Me,” was sung by Mrs. William Russell, accompanied at the console of the organ by M.E. Foster. Pallbearers were James Davidson, Frank Croly, Tom Money and Wallace Croly, nephews of the deceased, and Bob Smith and Jack McPhee, grandsons. Interment was made in Mount Hope Cemetery and the Last Post was sounded by Sea Cadet George MacGregor.
