Four Have Been Killed in Action – Five Have Been Wounded – A Days Record
The price paid by Brantford for the Somme victory, glorious as it was, is being brought home to Brantfordites through the issuance of the official casualty lists covering the engagement.
Today’s list is about the heaviest since the fight for the Ypres salient, there being five reported killed in action or died of wounds, and four wounded.
Private Clifford Kelly
“Killed in action on September 15,” was the heart-rending news received at 13 Wellington Street early this morning by Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Kelly in regard to their 22-year old son, Private Clifford Kelly, who for the past three months has been in the trenches in Europe, doing “his bit.” A card received on Saturday from their son brought the information that he was all right, and the sudden news of his death this morning was the more heart-rending.
When Pte. Kelly enlisted he was working at the Condensed Milk Evaporator in Norwich, and with a number of his chums he enlisted with the 71st Battalion in Woodstock, Five months ago he passed through Brantford on his way overseas. One month afterwards, he was in the trenches, and he is now one of the many victims of the big Somme offensive. After getting overseas, he transferred to the hand grenade section of the 42nd Battalion. His father, mother, six sisters, and a small brother all mourn his loss.
