Brantford Corporal Wins Military Medal

Word has been received that Lance Corporal Arthur Thomas Elsden, Farringdon Hill, has been awarded the Military Medal. He left here with the 125th Battalion, and was transferred to the 87th in France, with which he served with distinction. He was a former employee of the Goold, Shapley and Muir Company. Corp. Elsden is expected back home in the course of a few days.

Private Elsden Wounded

Mrs. Florence Elsden has received official notification from Ottawa that her husband, Private Thomas Elsden has received gunshot wounds in the eye and face and had been admitted to the second Australian General Hospital. Pte. Arthur Thomas Elsden enlisted with the first overseas battalion of the Dufferin Rifles.

A. Thomas Elsden

A Thomas Elsden, 73 of 14 Helen Avenue, died Tuesday at the Brantford General Hospital. Born in Shropshire, England, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Elsden. He had been a resident of Brantford since coming to Canada in 1911 and had been a member of St. John’s Anglican Church since 1914. He was a member of Grace Church Men’s Club, the Brantford Horticultural Society and the Maccabees. During the First World War he served with the 125th Battalion, was wounded during service, and received the Military Medal. Mr. Elsden had been a decorator before retirement 10 years ago. Surviving besides his wife, the former Florence Brittain, are one son, Arthur R. of Brantford; one brother, Fred of Brantford; six grandchildren. A son, Flying Officer Kenneth Edgar Elsden died in 1953, and a daughter, Margaret in 1920. Mr. Elsden is at Thorpe Brothers’ Funeral Home for service Friday at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Farringdon Burial Ground. Rev. C.V. Tompkins will officiate.
