Casualty List is Mounting

Mrs. Gertrude Churchward of 145 Cayuga Street, has received official notification that her husband, Pte. Arthur Churchward, formerly of the 125th Battalion has been admitted to the Australian hospital at Wimereux, on April 10 suffering from a slight gunshot wound in the left arm. Private Churchward prior to his enlistment was an employee of the Verity Plow Company. His brother Harold is with the 125th Battalion in France. Besides his wife, he has a family of 3 children.

Arthur F. Churchward

Arthur F. (Alf) Churchward, 75 of 47 Allenby Avenue, died Monday in the Brantford General Hospital.  He was born in Plymouth, Devon, England, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Thomas Churchward, and resided in Brantford since coming to Canada in 1910.  Mr. Churchward was a member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church.  Prior to his retirement in 1960, he had been with Verity Works of Massey-Ferguson Limited for 50 years and was past president and a life member of the Quarter-Century Club and the Chest Fund Committee of M-F and served on the M-F Industrial Council for many years before the union came into being.  He also served on the M-F recreation committee for many years and was past president of the M-F Ex-Service Men’s Club.  During the First World War he served overseas with the 125th Battalion Association and the Royal Canadian Legion. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. William (Mabel) Cudmore of Brantford, Miss Irene Churchward of Brantford; a son, Roy S.A. Churchward of Brantford; four sisters, Mrs. A. (Alice) Cottam, Mrs. F. (May) House, Mrs. George (Ida) Everett, all of Plymouth, England, Mrs. Walter (Elsie) Dowden of Brantford; two grandchildren.  Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, the former Elizabeth Ellen (Nellie) Horton in 1953, a daughter, Mrs. George (Doris) Padfield, in 1940, as sister, Mrs. Jessie Couch of Plymouth, England, died the same day as Mr. Churchward, and two brothers, Langley of Plymouth died in 1957 and Harold of Brantford in 1961.  Mr. Churchward is at Thorpe Brothers’ Funeral Home for service Thursday at 2 p.m.  Interment will be in Farringdon Burial Ground.  Rev. C.S. Inder of Trinity Church will officiate.
