Alfred James Martindale

Word was received here of the death early this morning t Montreal of Alfred James Martindale.  Mr. Martindale was in his forty-ninth year.  He was a former member of the Brantford Fire Department, retiring on March 26, 1934.  He joined the department on October 11, 1921.  Mr. Martindale was forced to resign from the Fire Department, due to poor health which affected his eyesight.  He has been living at 14 Strathcona Avenue.  Three weeks ago he went to Montreal with Mrs. Martindale to visit some friends.

Alfred James Martindale

Alfred James Martindale, who died suddenly Saturday in Montreal, where with Mrs. Martindale, he was spending a holiday, was brought back to the city yesterday, and he is at present resting at his home, 14 Strathcona Avenue.  Deceased was stricken with a heart attack and his wide circle of friends will regret to learn that his holiday ended so disastrously.  Mr. Martindale retired two years ago, owing to ill-health, from active service as a fireman.  He served overseas during the Great War and was a member of the Canadian Legion, Ozias Lodge, A.F. and A.M. and at one time member of the Brantford Branch of the Ontario Association of Firefighters.  To mourn his loss, besides his sorrowing widow, are two daughters, Doris and Edna, both at home, four sisters and a brother in Watford, England.  A private service will be held tomorrow afternoon at his home with a public service in Trinity Church, with burial in the Soldiers’ Plot, Mount Hope Cemetery.  The local firemen, members of his lodge and the Canadian Legion will attend the funeral service.

Alfred James Martindale

Funeral services for A.J. Martindale, 14 Strathcona Avenue for many years a member of the Brantford Fire Department, were conducted yesterday at the home, Holy Trinity Anglican Church and at Mount Hope Cemetery, where interment was made.  Rev. H.E. Merifield officiated and a large number of floral tributes and attendance of many relatives and friends testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held.  Firemen, police, Masons and members of the Brantford Branch of the Canadian Legion attended in a boy, Masonic and Canadian Legion services were held and Bugler H. Porter sounded “Last Post” at the graveside.  Representatives of the Brantford and District Advisory Board of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind were present.  The Masonic service was in charge of Wor. Master J.H. Woolsey of Reba Lodge; Wor. P.M. Walter Upsone; Wor. P.M. C.C. Slemin, Wor. P.M. J.H. Spence and Wor. Master P. Oliver of Ozias Lodge. Poppies were strewn on the grave by the Legionnaires.  The pallbearers all members of the Fire Department were: John McGrattan, J.I. Walters, W. Lambert, G. Bremner, C. Johnson and C. Curtis.
