Letters and documents

BX May 10, 1915

Private Alfred George Holway is the latest Brantfordite to be reported wounded in the Ypres battle, and according to a letter received this morning by his wife, who resides at 25 George Street, he was wounded over the left eye and overcome by the asphyxiating gasses which the Germans used with temporary success in their advance. He is now in a hospital somewhere in France. No further details are included in the letter, but Pte. Holway expressed grave anxiety for his fellow soldiers of the 4th Battalion, which lost heavily in the fighting.

Prior to his departure with the first contingent of Dufferin Rifles, Private Holway was a member of the 38th, he having served one year with the regiment. He was by trade a machinist, being employed at the time of his enlistment at the Massey-Harris works. His wife and two children reside at 25 George Street, his sister-in-law, Mrs. Crouch, wife of Sgt. Crouch, who is also with the first contingent in France, lives at 12 Balfour Street.
