Brantford Casualties

There are at least two Brantford names in the casualty list issued this morning. Pte. Arthur Bertram Smith is reported wounded and Pte. Albert Edward Manning is reported suffering from shock.

Pte. Albert Edward Manning who is suffering from shock, left with the 2nd Contingent. He is 26 years of age, unmarried, and lived at 23 Edwards Street before enlisting. He was employed as a laborer. Pte. Arthur B. Smith, whose name appears amongst the wounded, is said to have been a neighbor of Manning’s.

Albert Edward Manning

Albert E. (Bert) Manning, 64 of 40 Aberdeen Avenue, died Saturday in the Toronto general Hospital.  Born in Plymouth, England, he came to Brantford 42 years ago and was employed in the parts’ department of the Massey-Harris Company here for 40 years.  He was a member of the Massey-Harris Quarter Century Club.  He served overseas for five years in the First World War, being one of the originals of the 19th Battalion.  He was a member of Brant Lodge, A.F. and A.M., and of Wesley United Church.  He is survived by his widow, the former Hilda M. Smith, and one son, Alan at home.  He is resting at the Hill and Robinson funeral Home until Tuesday, when the funeral service will be held in the chapel at 3.30 p.m.  Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Many friends and relatives attended the funeral service Tuesday afternoon at the Hill and Robinson Funeral Home for Albert E. (Bert) Manning, which was conducted by Rev. M.C. Parr, of Wesley United Church.  The many in attendance and the display of floral tributes marked the high regard in which Mr. Manning was held. The pallbearers were V. Smith, L. Stow, both of Brant Lodge, A.F. and A.M.; G.T. Cockshutt, of the 19th Battalion; S. Hall, J. Payne and G. Frances all of the Massey-Harris Co.  Interment was in Mount Hope Cemetery.  Monday evening members of Brant Lodge, A.F. and A.M., No. 45, conducted a Masonic service in honor of the deceased.  W. Bro. William Walton officiated.  Assisting Mr. Walton were Rt. W. Bro. R.W.E. McFadden, Rt. W. Bro. C. Sharpe, V.W. Bro. A. Bowden, V.W. Bro. D. Carter, W. Bros. W. North, V. Smith, A.W. King and F. Billo and Bro. L. Johnson.
