Details: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in action. During an intense bombardment of our trenches immediately preceding a hostile raid, this N.C.O. rendered most valuable service in operating a Lewis Gun. His promptness in bringing the gun into action undoubtedly prevented the enemy from reaching our advanced posts. Although wounded, he continued firing until the enemy were driven back to their own lines.

Two Veterans Are Home Again

Although four veterans were expected to arrive home yesterday on the 3.52 G.T.R. train, only two Privates Abraham Jackson Sharples and Samuel Hayhurst, reached Brantford as per schedule. A telegram was received from the military commission in Toronto announcing the arrival, so a large reputation from the Soldiers’ Aid commission met the two men and formally welcomed them home. Both men appeared fit.

Private Abraham Sharples is the owner of the coveted decoration, the Military Medal, he having displayed his bravery at Vimy Ridge by sticking to a machine gun under particular difficulties. He was wounded in the shoulder by shrapnel shortly after winning his decoration.
