The Silver Covenant Chain is an extension of the alliance created between the Six Nations and the British through the Two Row Wampum.  Although the Two Row Wampum linked the Six Nations and the British into an alliance, the Silver Covenant Chain strengthened this alliance by giving it meaning and further protocols represented by chain links and the fact that the chain is made from silver.  According to the North American Indian Travelling College, “the first link [of the chain] represented peace between them [the Six Nations and the British].  The second link represented having a good mind, while the third [link] was a symbol of eternal friendship.  It was said that should the chain become tarnished they [the Six Nations and the British] would sit together once again to polish the links, and renew the agreement.”
